Snow Lovers

Living in the mountains of Colorado, we get lots and lots of snow.....which the dogs love but I sometimes hate! Finnish Lapphunds are used to an environment of cold and snow, so the Lappies thrive in this environment.

Nella and Taavi could play outside all day, and sometimes have to be coaxed in to warm up and snuggle. They don't care if the snow is falling or lay in piles over 3 feet high. We are blessed to have almost 3 relatively flat acres for them to play in.

However, sometimes snow can even baffle a Lappie! Check out this video of Nella deciding how to conquer the high snow on our deck.

Meet Taavi

Name: Gaamosvalo des Royaumes du Grand Nord "Taavi" (male)
Dam: Davenaasti des Royaumes du Grand Nord
Sire: Lapinlumon Kuuraturkki "Elias"
Born: 10/28/2011

We loved Nella so much that we decided to get another Finnish Lapphund, a male to show and possibly breed in the future. Taavi also came to us from France in December 2011. We could not have asked for a better Christmas present. He is currently 3 1/2 months old. Taavi is the friendliest little butterball of a puppy that you could imagine. He is very smart too, and already knows sit, stay, speak and come. He is going to be a big boy and is already over 16 pounds.

Taavi's favorite things to do are anything to do with food and treats, having his belly rubbed, playing with Nella, and being cuddled.

Meet Nella

          Name: Genella Kukkalbmi "Nella" (female)
Dam: Cuurankukka des Royaumes du Grand Nord
    Sire:  Lapinlumon Albmi
      Born: 4/6/2011

We got Nella from France in June 2011. She is a wolf-sable Finnish Lapphund and has brown, black, white, tan and sable coloring. She is currently 10 1/2 months old. She is the sweetest, most loving girl. I cannot imagine life without her. Nella's favorite hobbies are playing with stuffed toys, running around outside in the snow, chasing sticks, and curling up on the couch with her family.

She is a very smart girl and currently knows sit, shake with both paws, speak loud and quiet, stay, come, leave it, dance, down, roll over, crawl, and bow. She will be enrolling in agility training this spring after she turns 1 year old.

Nella will be our first female to possibly breed in the future, as long as everything checks out ok medically and she conforms to the breed standards.

History of the Finnish Lapphund

Welcome!

I wanted to start this blog to let people know about these amazing dogs! I have never encountered a more intelligent, eager to please breed with such a good temperament. I have been a dog lover all my life but usually had smaller breeds. The Finnish Lapphund captured my heart when I was researching dog breeds and learned of them. Lapphunds, also known as Lapinkoira in Finnish, have a long-standing history as the companions and reindeer-herding breed of the Nordic people known as the Sami. They were not only hard workers but also the family pets of these cold-weather people. The breed has changed very little since this time, undergoing only one major change where the breed split into Swedish and Finnish varieties. The Finnish Lapphund has a longer coat and can come in a variety of colors. They have a trademark curled fluffy tail and very beautiful markings. This breed still retains a strong herding instinct and should be allowed to have a large area to run and play.

To be continued....
